Everyone Needs a Backer

No matter how big or small our dreams are, everyone needs a backer.

When Colin Chapman embarked on the ambitious journey of starting his own car company, he was little more than a structural engineering graduate with a bug for race cars. Having built and raced his first car in 1948 while still a student, it was only a matter of time before he would get more serious. Partnering with fellow engineer Colin Dare, Lotus Engineering Co.,Ltd. was started in 1952 with very little in the way of financing or infrastructure. In its infancy, the two engineers ran Lotus in their spare time, before it became their full time occupations.

But everyone needs a backer, right? While at a dance in 1944, Colin would meet a very special person that would change his life in more ways than one. Hazel Williams would not only go on to be Collin’s wife and life-long partner, but she would also be his first investor. How much money did Hazel commit to her future-husband’s dreams of starting a car company? 25 Pounds Sterling. It doesn’t sound like much, but every little bit of faith and support goes a long way.

The dream that Colin and Hazel shared so many years ago is still alive and producing exciting cars to this day. 25 Pounds doesn’t sound like much, but the meaning behind it’s value is priceless.
